Chapter 12

Puzzling Evidence

“Report,” Winters said to General Aguila.

“His vital signs seem to be okay,” observed Donatello.

He lifted one of Raphael's eyelids and shone alight on it. “Pupil dilation is normal.”

“Get… off… me,” Raphael growled weakly, trying to push Donatello's hand away.

“Temper is normal too,” Donatello said, looking up at Casey, April, Michelangelo, and Leonardo. Casey had called the Turtles after bringing Raphael to his apartment. “He's going to be fine, health wise, I mean. Otherwise, he's still the same old Raph.”

Then he saw the stone disk in his brother's shell. “Whoa, what's this?”

Donatello pulled out the disk with a pair of pliers and held it up for all to see. “Some sort of stone, probably obsidian,” he said. “There's an engraving on it. Looks… Latin American. Aztec? No. Mayan? No, definitely not. Hmm… but this was probably the tranquilizer dart.”

April looked at the disc and swallowed hard. “It can't be,” she said.

“What can't be, April?” asked Donatello.

“It's just a myth,” she replied. “A legend. Four statues I found in the rain forests of Central America,” she said.

She took the disk from Donatello. “It can't be,” she repeated, sitting down on the floor.

Casey leaned down toward April. “Would it help if I said that Raph and I were chased by one of those statues you collected for that Winters guy?” asked Casey.

April's jaw dropped open.

“What are you talking about, Casey?” interjected Leonardo.

“Just some story this Winters guy told us. It all started down in Latin America. Long before the Ashmecks and the Macaroons.”

“Aztecs and Mayans,” corrected April.

“That's what I said,” replied Casey.

April looked up at Casey. “Sit down, Jones,” she said,

before recounting the legend that Max Winters had told her.

“So there was this guy named Yaotl,” she began.

When she finished, Michelangelo stared at her. “Well, what next?” he asked.

“That's it. No one knows. The legend stops there,” answered April, before adding, “and it's just a legend.” She looked over at Casey. Sure enough, he had fallen asleep again.

Donatello studied the dart through his magnifying goggles. “The microtech of this dart is astounding,” he said. “The molybdenum is of a grade found only in a few select markets, not to mention its current value is going for a little more than two grand an ounce on the futures market. At least as of this morning.”

Donatello looked up from the disk — at everyone's surprised faces.

“What? I dabble in the market, is all,” he said in response.

“So what we have is someone with a lot of money,” noted Leonardo.

“And access to technology and the means to produce it to very exacting specs,” added Donatello.

“Someone with a keen interest in these monsters and them four stone jokers,” said Raphael, now fully recovered.

“It all points to the Winters Corporation,” said Donatello.

“How do you figure that, Donnie?” asked Leonardo.

“Hello? Genius, remember?” Donatello said, tap-ping his temple. “Well, that and the fact that this little part of the disk has the Winters Corporation logo on it,” he added with a grin.

Leonardo looked out the window. “So do you think he's trying to recreate the events from back then?” he asked.
